A programme comprising choir, organ and works for solo voice by
J S Bach
Did you know that this year is a special Bach year on the music calendar, as it
represents the 250th remembrance year of the death of Johann Sebastian Bach? In
collaboration with Musica Festiva, the Pretoria Bach Choir, together with
organist Eddie Davey, will be presenting an all Bach concert of choral singing,
solo works and organ music. The concert will take place on 27 May 2000 in the
Universiteitsoord Dutch Reformed Church in Pretoria at 19h30
to commemorate this special Bach year.
The choir will sing the following choir works by J S Bach (1685 - 1750):
-
The motet: "Lobet den Hern, alle Heiden" (BWV
230)
This motet (for four choral voice parts) comprises three sections:
-
Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden;
-
Denn seine Gnade und Wahrheit; and
-
Alleluja
-
Jesu, Joy of man's Desiring ("Jesu, bleibet
meine Freude")
from the Cantata: Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (BWV 147)
-
The cantata: "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme"
(Cantate zum 27. nach Trinitatis Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme - BWV 140)
-
All three works are masterpieces in which Bach's genius is evident in the
deceptively simple lyricism and exquisite congruity amongst voice, meaning and
music.
